ISLAMABAD: A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Monday morning began hearing review petitions against the verdict of the famous 2012 case that came to be known as the ‘Asghar Khan’ case.
The 2012 verdict in the case that former air chief marshal Asghar Khan had filed, had initiated legal proceedings against former army chief General Mirza Aslam Beg and former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) DG Lieutenant General Asad Durrani for handing out Rs 140 million to politicians to weaken Benazir Bhutto’s chances of winning the 1990 elections.
The current petitions have been filed by the former army chief and the former ISI DG against the 2012 verdict.
In Monday’s hearing of the petitions, the CJP asked the late Asghar Khan’s advocate Salman Akram Raja to brief the court on the case.
The CJP also ordered Aslam Beg to appear before the court, and then ordered the former general to argue his stance if his lawyer was not present.
To this, the retired general replied that he had been informed about the hearing only a day earlier and was thus unprepared. Both he and former ISI DG Asad Durrani requested the court to adjourn the hearing.
The CJP thus adjourned the hearing till 2.30pm.
